A proper carp sleeping bag fixes to your bedchair, unzips down both sides and lets you get to the rods in seconds when the alarm goes. These picks are standalone bags, not full sleep systems, chosen on season rating, filling and features from the listings rather than hands-on testing.

What actually matters

Season rating

Season ratings are a rough guide rather than a standard. A three-season bag suits spring to autumn; four-season adds warmth for colder nights; five-season is for proper winter fishing. If you fish all year, a bag with a removable liner, or a three-season bag plus a thermal cover, saves buying two.

Fit to your bedchair

Carp bags have elasticated hoods and straps that fix them to the bed, so they don't slide off when you jump up. Match the bag to your bedchair's size: compact, standard or wide. A bag that's too big bunches up; too small and it won't stretch over the corners. Full sleep systems combine the bed and bag in one.

Zips that let you get out fast

Crash zips down both sides let you roll out in either direction when a fish takes. Look for zip baffles, which stop cold air getting in along the zip, and webbing or guards that stop the zip snagging. Don't zip yourself in so tight you can't reach the rods quickly: a fish left running towards snags is a fish at risk.

Filling, lining and weight

Hollow fibre fillings are standard. Fleece linings feel warm and soft; smooth polyester or taffeta is cooler and doesn't cling to clothes. A water-resistant outer helps with condensation dripping in a bivvy. Warmer bags are bulkier, so check the pack size if you walk far.

Staying warm safely

Layer up and use a cover rather than heating your shelter. Never run a gas heater or stove in a closed bivvy or brolly while you sleep. For more, see your first overnighter and winter carp fishing.

Questions

What season sleeping bag do I need for carp fishing?

A three-season bag is enough from spring to autumn. If you fish through winter, go for a four or five-season bag, or a bag with a removable liner so you can change its warmth with the weather.

Do I need a special carp sleeping bag?

It helps. Carp bags fix to the bedchair with elasticated hoods and straps, and have crash zips down both sides so you can get to the rods quickly. A camping bag works but slides about and is slower to get out of.

What is a five-season sleeping bag?

It's a bag aimed at the coldest winter nights. Many five-season carp bags use a zip-in or removable liner, so you can take a layer out and use them as a three-season bag in warmer months.

How do I stop condensation soaking my sleeping bag?

Ventilate the shelter, use a twin-skin bivvy or overwrap in cold weather, and choose a bag or cover with a water-resistant outer. Air the bag out at home after every session so it dries properly.

Should I buy a sleeping bag or a sleep system?

A separate bag is cheaper if you already own a bedchair and is easier to wash and replace. A sleep system combines bed and bag in one, which is quicker to set up but heavier and bulkier.
