What actually matters

Waterproofing: the hydrostatic head

The hydrostatic head (HH) is how much water pressure the fabric resists before it leaks. 5,000mm will keep showers out; 10,000mm or more is what you want for long sessions in proper British weather, especially when wind drives rain against the panels.

Pram hood, dome or quick-erect

  • Pram hood shelters fold out from a front hinge like a pram. They're quick, light and have a low profile in the wind.
  • Dome shelters offer more headroom and storage but take longer to pitch.
  • Quick-erect designs use a hinged frame that springs up in seconds, ideal if you move swims to follow fish.

Single skin versus twin skin

A single-skin bivvy will run with condensation on cold, still nights. An overwrap or an inner capsule adds a second layer of air, which keeps you drier and warmer from autumn to spring. If you fish through winter, budget for one.

Ventilation and space

A rear vent with mesh stops the shelter turning into a sauna in summer. Check the bivvy fits a bedchair plus your bags with room to spare, and that the door lets you reach the rods quickly.

What comes in the box

Groundsheets, storm poles and decent pegs are not always included. Price the whole system, not just the canopy. For a full first-night kit list, see your first overnighter, and for staying safe after dark, night fishing for carp.

Questions

What hydrostatic head do I need for a carp bivvy?

For overnight and session fishing in the UK, look for 10,000mm or more. Lower ratings can be fine for summer day shelters, but driven rain on a long session will find its way through weaker fabric.

Do I need a one-man or two-man bivvy?

Most anglers fishing alone choose a one-man bivvy: it's lighter, quicker to pitch and fits more swims. Go two-man only if you regularly share or want lots of room for kit on long sessions.

Is an overwrap or inner capsule worth it?

Yes if you fish from autumn to spring. The second skin traps a layer of air, reducing condensation and keeping the inside noticeably warmer. In summer you can leave it at home.

How do I stop condensation in my bivvy?

Keep vents open, avoid cooking inside, use a twin-skin set-up in cold weather and dry the bivvy out properly at home before storing it.

Can I use a brolly instead of a bivvy?

For day sessions and short overnighters in good weather, a brolly is lighter and quicker. For longer sessions or bad weather, a fully enclosed bivvy is warmer, drier and safer.
